  About Us

OUR HISTORY

The Manly-Warringah Orchid Society was formed in 1971 by the amalgamation of two orchid societies located in the Manly and Northern Beaches area of Sydney, Australia. MONTHLY MEETINGS

The next Manly Warringah Orchid Society Meetings will take place on 24th July 2008 and usually take place on the 4th Thursday of each month at the Cromer Community Centre, Fisher Road North, Cromer, starting at 8 PM.

Women’s Auxiliary

The Society also has an active Women’s Auxiliary. Which meets at regular intervals. The Women’s Auxiliary gets heavily involved in society business by providing refreshments for members, judges, and others at our events. The Auxiliary is probably better known for its outings, and lunches, and floral art lessons. The latter brings great success for the Ladies Auxiliary members in floral art competitions.

Cultural Advice

Society Members and guests are encouraged to bring along their plants, or questions, to receive cultural advice from members who have a particular level of expertise in the orchid concerned. In addition Society Members also give mini-cultural Q & A sessions at some meetings.

Guest Lecturers and speakers

Apart from the September meeting, which is our Annual General Meeting, guest speakers from the orchid world come along and give talks about orchids, culture, orchid travels, etc. Some of our guest speakers are very well known both and have spoken given presentations to orchidists both nationally and internationally.

Member’s Library

Members are welcome to borrow orchid books and magazines for a period of one month from our very extensive library. Suggestions and recommendations for the purchase of additional stock is always welcome.

Plant Sales

Society Members can bring along surplus orchid plants for selling at the plant sales table. Members are often able to “pick up a bargain” and purchase that orchid that has been a wish for a long time. A “wants” list is also maintained where members can lodge their wish to purchase a particular orchid species or hybrid. Other members looking in the wish list may just have what the person wants.

Growing Equipment and Pots

As a convenience for the members, the society maintains a stock of pots, hangers, stakes, labels and other sundries for members to purchase.
